Brooklyn Monk in Asia: International Bokator Fight (Parts 1-3)

In 2004, the Bokator association started. In 2007, the national champions took place for the first time. On July 16, 2011, Brooklyn Monk, Antonio Graceffo, traveled to Siem Reap to witness the first ever, international Bokator tournament, as the team from France, lead by Benjamin (Sarin) Sebire took on the Khmers in this ancient MMA style fighting art. Kicks, punches, knees, elbows, ground fighting, chokes, submissions, and tiny, MMA gloves. It was brutal.

“Buddhism is a way to reveal God. We are all looking for the truth, by different ways, by Buddhism, by Christianity… My job as a missionary is to find what God has revealed of himself according to Buddhism.” Father Francois.

The Brooklyn Monk, Antonio Graceffo, travels to Phnom Penh, Cambodia to interview Father Francois, author of the book, “Cambodia Year Zero” His personal history of the Khmer Rouge takeover. Since 1965, Father Francois has been involved with helping the people of Cambodia. He lived under the Regime of Prince Sihanouk, endured civil war, under General Lon Nol, and was expelled by the Khmer Rouge, three weeks after the take over of Cambodia.

 

After his expulsion, he stayed with Khmer refugees in France, as well as in the refugee camps in Cambodia and Thailand.

Father is an incredible linguist, fluent in French, English, and Khmer. He personally translated, into Khmer, the Bible, as well as books used for to train priests in Cambodia. He has also worked on translations of dictionaries and numerous educational resources.

 

Antonio says, “I have spent much of the last ten years living and studying with Buddhists and Muslims. It felt good to begin to get back to my Catholic roots. Father Francois is an incredible expert on Cambodia. He has endured nearly half a century of the joys and suffering of the Khmer people.”

Antonio lived in Cambodia from 2004-2005. during that time, he spent three months studying Khmer intensively, then spent the rest of the time in the field, doing interviews and research, writing articles for media all over the world. His first 18 months in Cambodia culminated in his book, “Re-Discovering the Khmers.” The book follows Antonio on an adventure tour from Siem Reap, to Sihanookville, Phnom Penh, Bokor Mountain, Ratanakiri, and other locations, mountain climbing, scuba diving, martial arts, ethnic minorities and tribes s well as ancient and modern Khmer culture. He returned to Cambodia several times, over a period of years, to continue his martial arts training. In 2010, his book “Warrior Odyssey” was released by Black Belt Books. “Warrior Odyssey” contains two in-depth chapters on Khmer martial arts. His next book, “Khun Khmer: Cambodian Martial Arts Diary”, is expected to be released by the end of 2011. This will be the first complete book of Khmer martial arts ever written.

Antonio Graceffo and Benjamin (Sarin) Sebire discuss the recent Cambodia vs. France Bokator MMA fight and the preparation for the upcoming MMA fight in Malaysia, which Antonio Graceffo and a team of three Khmer Bokator fighters will fight in. This will be the first time Bokator fighters have fought outside of the country, and it marks an historic day for the development of the sport of Bokator.
