I like this article. While houses may not be the same sort of investment as stocks, they are still an investment in quality of life. If you are retiring, you can make a decent profit. One case is that you own a large family house in an expensive area. When kids have moved out of home and you are ready to retire, you no longer need that large house. By downsizing, and relocating, you are buying a cheaper house. Therefore, you have made a profit.
TVs, furniture, etc, can often be categorised as "cost-of-living". They are not something directly related to your investment, but to you life in general.
I won't try and make up numbers, I'm sure you know what you're talking about, but some of the arguments just don't quite ring true.

This is interesting. I recently read a book that reminded me about this blog post. A book called The Worst Kind of Lies. The author, John Patrick Lamont, draws upon fourteen years of experience working within the life insurance industry to write his novels. "The Worst Kind of Lies" reads more truth than fiction.
You never know what kind of Lies you will come across in the corporate world will you!
